One of the best parts of camping is after a long adventure-filled day in Ventura is climbing into your sleeping bag for a great nights sleep. Today we explore the key functions of the sleeping bag as it relates to the key functions of finding God’s REST in each season.

Follow along with notes from Pastor Matt here:

1 – What Rest Does For Us

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

A – Protection From The Environment
B – Comfort From The Ground
C – Regulate The Temperature

2 – What Prevents Us From Resting

A – Lack Of Faith

2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by FAITH, not by sight.

B – Laziness
C – Intentionality

Hebrews 4:10-11 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

3 – Finding Rest With Jesus

Luke 8:51-53 51 When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn’t let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl’s father and mother. 52 The house was filled with people weeping and wailing, but he said, “Stop the weeping! She isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”53 But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died. 54 Then Jesus took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, “My child, get up!” 55 And at that moment her life returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

A – Ignore Your Haters
B – Listen To Jesus
C – Eat What Jesus Provides

A key component to any camping experience – a symbol of shelter and protection. But sometimes we can get comfortable with that shelter & protection and settle in. Notes to follow along with Pastor Matt…

Genesis 15:1-3

1 The Lord spoke to Abram in a vision and said to him, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great.”2 But Abram replied, “O Sovereign Lord, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son? Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth. 3 You have given me no descendants of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.”

2 – Your Responsibilities In Your Seasons

Genesis 15:4-6 Then the Lord said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.” 5 Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”6 And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.

Genesis 15:7-11 Then the Lord told him, “I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession.” 8 But Abram replied, “O Sovereign Lord, how can I be sure that I will actually possess it?”9 The Lord told him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 So Abram presented all these to him and killed them. Then he cut each animal down the middle and laid the halves side by side; he did not, however, cut the birds in half. 11 Some vultures swooped down to eat the carcasses, but Abram chased them away.

A – Committed To You Always

B – Committed To Speak

C – Committed To Covenant

Easter is such a special time for our faith. If you have ever asked yourself, “How do I get into Heaven” or “What happens when I die” this is a great podcast for you. Not only Will you find out what Jesus has to offer you in Heaven but listen in to what you have access to now in life.

There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14 This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

In this second episode of our CAMP series – we speak to the idea of prepping to camp out. You need to plan for the site, weather, and duration. Equally – in our spiritual seasons we need to plan for where we will be: have we found a place of shade and protection from the elements; is the campsite (our hearts) cleared from debris (sin issues or distractions) that might cause us to trip up, stumble in the dark, or make a long night uncomfortable; and do we have enough food and water to sustain us for the duration? Are you ready to start your next season not just well – but AWESOME?!

Notes for this sermon to follow along with:

Mark 1:35-38 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”

1 – Pick Your Campsite

A – Walk-able
B – Weather
Proverbs 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm.

C – Water
Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

2 – Removing Rocks

A – The sand
Matthew 7:26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

B – The Stones
C – The Boulder
Colossians 3:1-2 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

3 – Setting Up camp

A – Shelter
B – Light Source
2 Peter 1:12 Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught.

C – Guard your Food
Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

This morning at Ventura Lighthouse Church we’re starting a new sermon series – Camp. Did you know God operates in our life from season to season? Each one has a purpose and each one – like a camping trip – requires preparation. Are you prepared to pull up stakes from the current camp site? Are you ready for the next trip or adventure?

Here’s an outline of todays discussion:

1 – When You Fail To Prepare

Genesis 13:8-13 So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”

10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plainand pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.

A – Costly
B – Lead by sight
C – Season doesn’t end

2 – What You Need To Pack

A – Pack Your Clothes
1 Peter 5:5Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

B – Pack Your Food
John 6:35Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
C – Pack Your Tools

3 – What You Need To Know

A – It’s Temporary
Psalm 23:4 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

B – You’re Not Alone

C – You’re There On Assignment
