Day 4: The Debt You Could Never Pay

Why Do I Keep Getting Hurt? · Living With Wisdom · July 11, 2026

Scripture
Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. At this the servant fell on his knees before him. “Be patient with me,” he begged, “and I will pay back everything.” The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. — Matthew 18:23-27 (NIV)
Matthew 18:23-27

The numbers in this parable are deliberate and extreme. Ten thousand talents was the largest number in the Greek language paired with the largest unit of currency. One talent was roughly twenty years of wages. Ten thousand talents was more than the entire annual tax revenue of Herod's kingdom. Jesus is using the most extreme number imaginable on purpose. Your debt to God is so large there is no math that describes it. And the king wipes it out completely. Not partially. Not with payment plans. Completely. Let that sink in before you think about what someone owes you.

Prayer

Father, I cannot comprehend the size of the debt You forgave me. Help me today to live in the reality of Your complete forgiveness.
