Day 5: What Forgiveness Is Not

Why Do I Keep Getting Hurt? · Living With Wisdom · July 11, 2026

Scripture
But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. “Pay back what you owe me!” he demanded. His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, “Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.” But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. — Matthew 18:28-30 (NIV)
Matthew 18:28-30

The forgiven servant was released from an unimaginable debt. Then he found someone who owed him a hundred denarii — about a hundred days' wages. A real amount, but nothing compared to what he had been forgiven. He grabbed the man by the throat. This is what unforgiveness looks like from where God is standing. You have been forgiven a debt you could never pay, and you are choking someone over something that could be settled. Forgiveness is not saying what happened was okay. It's not pretending it didn't hurt. It is releasing the debt. The prison you are throwing them into is actually building itself around you.

Prayer

Lord, I release the debt I've been holding against others. I don't want to live in a prison of my own making. Help me to let go.
