Day 2: The Root You Cannot See

Why Do I Keep Getting Hurt? · Living With Wisdom · July 11, 2026

Scripture
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking, ‘I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way,’ they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. — Deuteronomy 29:18-19 (NIV)
Deuteronomy 29:18-19

Moses warned Israel about a root that produces bitter poison — a person whose heart turns away from God. The writer of Hebrews connects this directly to unforgiveness. Think about how a root works: you don't see it. It's underground. Hidden. But it is actively doing something below the surface the whole time. A root from a tree can eat its way through a septic line without anyone knowing until the backup happens. Bitterness does the same thing in you. You can look fine on Sunday and have a bitter root growing all week. But the fruit eventually shows up. Don't wait until the damage surfaces.

Prayer

God, I don't want to be fine on the outside while bitterness grows on the inside. Expose the roots I've tried to hide and give me the strength to pull them out.
