Day 5: Rebellion Is as Sinful as Witchcraft

Why Is Obeying God So Hard? · Walking With Faith · September 5, 2026

Scripture
But Samuel replied, "What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he has rejected you as king." — 1 Samuel 15:22-23 (NLT)
1 Samuel 15:22-23

These are some of the sharpest words in Scripture. Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness is as bad as worshiping idols. God does not grade disobedience on a curve — partial obedience is still disobedience. Saul's downfall is not that he was imperfect; David would fail too. The difference is what happened when they were confronted: Saul protected his image. David repented. The scariest thing is that when we start lying to ourselves, we can start lying to God. So ask yourself today: am I protecting my image, or am I willing to repent?

Prayer

Lord, search my heart. Am I protecting my image like Saul, or repenting like David? Give me the humility to respond when You confront me.
