Day 2: Too Heavy to Carry Alone

How Do I Follow Jesus When I Feel Too Busy? · Walking With Faith · August 22, 2026

Scripture
“This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. “You’re going to wear yourself out — and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.” — Exodus 18:17-18 (NLT)
Exodus 18:17-18

Jethro is not telling Moses he is lazy — he is telling him his pace is unsustainable. The phrase “wear yourself out” carries the image of something fading, withering, being worn down. You can be doing something good in a way that is not good for you. Being overwhelmed is not always caused by doing evil things; sometimes it comes from carrying good things God never asked you to carry alone. It is like trying to bring every grocery bag in on one trip while a helper waits by the car — your fingers hurt, something spills, and the enemy smiles because he convinced you that asking for help means you are weak.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for wearing exhaustion like a badge of honor. Help me admit what is too heavy for me and stop insisting on doing everything in one trip, all by myself.
