Overwhelm is a sign of our times. This message looks at what Proverbs says about anxiety and how Jesus offers a different kind of rest for our souls.
Proverbs 12:25, Matthew 11:28-30
Overwhelm is not a sign of weak faith — it is a signal that you are carrying something you were never designed to carry. Anxiety weighs down the heart like a stone, but Jesus invites us to trade our heavy yoke for His easy one. Wisdom teaches us what to set down and what to pick up.
Anxiety is called a weight in the heart. The Hebrew word suggests a heaviness that presses down, like a stone on your chest. Before you can fix anything, you have to admit that it is heavy. You cannot set down something you refuse to admit you are carrying. The first step to freedom is honesty.
Jesus uses the word yoke, which was a farming tool used to connect two oxen so they could pull together. He says take My yoke because His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Not because life will suddenly be easy — but because He carries it with you. A yoke connects you to someone stronger so you stop pulling alone.
Paul does not say pretend you are not anxious. He does not say just have more faith. He says bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and the peace of God — which surpasses all understanding — will guard your heart and mind. Peace does not come from fixing everything. Peace comes from giving everything to the One who is big enough to carry it.
This week, I want you to do one thing: write down everything that is weighing on your heart. Every worry. Every fear. Every thing you have been carrying. Then go through that list with God and ask two questions: Is this mine to carry? And if it is, am I carrying it with You or alone? If it is not yours to carry, set it down. If it is too heavy for you, let Him carry it with you.
