Have you ever looked at your life and thought, 'Is this all there is?' At the well in John 4, a Samaritan woman came for water and met Jesus — who offered living water for her soul. In Week 2 of With Purpose, discover how to talk about Jesus naturally: see people the way Jesus sees them, make room for them the way He did, and help them encounter Him for themselves.
John 4:7-10; John 4:13-14; John 4:25-26; John 4:28-30; John 4:39-42
People stuck in routine need living water only Jesus gives, and our purpose is to bring it to them — see people the way Jesus sees them, make room for them the way He did, and help them encounter Him for themselves.
Jews and Samaritans did not get along. The Jews believed you had to worship in Jerusalem; Samaritans believed you had to worship on Mount Gerizim. About 100 years before Jesus, the Jewish ruler John Hyrcanus destroyed the Samaritan temple on Mount Gerizim. The tension was real. Then Jesus — a Jew — asks a Samaritan woman for a drink. The disciples went into town to buy food. The woman went to the well to draw water. Everyone had an errand, but Jesus saw an opportunity. When the disciples returned, they were shocked to find Him talking with a woman, yet none dared ask why. Where they saw an unexpected conversation, Jesus saw someone worth reaching. Jesus sees a person not a problem. The devil will convince you that people are problems and to avoid them. You are not called to keep tension and divide. You are called to be like Jesus. A person is more than their reputation, more than their mistakes, more than their differences from us. Jesus knew this woman's circumstances, yet His knowledge did not become an excuse to avoid her. He engaged her with truth and dignity.
Jesus offers 'living water.' She hears that through the practical problem in front of her: the well is deep, He has no rope or bucket, drawing water is work, and Jacob gave this well. Her questions make sense within what she currently understands. Jesus does not rush past her. He replies, 'Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.' Then He speaks truth with dignity: 'Go and get your husband' — and she has had five husbands and is living with a man who is not her husband. He does not shame her away; He stays. She raises the old divide — Jerusalem or Gerizim? Jesus answers that true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, and then tells her plainly, 'I am the Messiah!' Jesus did not begin with a speech. He began with a request: 'Give me a drink.' A simple conversation became an opportunity to speak about living water, worship, and His identity. A full schedule can leave little room for meaningful relationships. Living with purpose means making space to notice, listen, serve, and speak.
The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, 'Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?' She came to fill a jar and left it behind because she found something better. Many Samaritans believed because of her testimony, came out to see Jesus, begged Him to stay, and He stayed two days. Then they told her, 'Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.' Many initially believed because of her testimony; then after hearing Jesus themselves, their belief became their own. You do not have to know everything to share something real. The best thing you can do is be honest with your story so others can find Jesus. The disciples saw a lunch errand. The woman saw a trip to the well. Jesus saw people who needed life.
This week pray every day: 'Jesus help me to see the people around me like you see them and help me to share your words today.' Name one person stuck in routine, see them the way Jesus does, make room — slow down, listen, serve, wait when the Holy Spirit says wait — and share your honest story so they can encounter Jesus themselves. Remember your purpose on this planet: help grow God's kingdom one conversation at a time.
Spend the week reflecting on this message with daily scripture readings, reflections, and prayers. Each day builds on the sermon and helps you apply biblical wisdom to your life.
