God's presence in our lives is not just for our comfort — it is for His purpose. He has prepared good works for us to walk in, and He goes with us every step of the way.
Jeremiah 29:11, Ephesians 2:10
Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most quoted verses in Scripture, but we often miss the context. God was speaking to exiles — people in a hard place. He was not promising them an easy life. He was promising them a future and a hope. And Ephesians 2:10 says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. God's presence is not just a blanket of comfort. It is a commissioning. He is with us so that we can be His hands and feet in the world.
God told the Israelites in exile: 'For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.' But here is what most people miss — they were in exile. They were in a hard place. And God was saying 'I have plans for you right here.' Not 'I will get you out of this.' 'I have a purpose for you in this.' God's plans for you are not just about getting you to a comfortable destination. His plans are about who you become along the way and who you can serve right where you are.
Paul says you are God's workmanship. The Greek word is poiema — poem, masterpiece, work of art. You are not a mistake. You are not an accident. You are God's poem, written by His hand, created in Christ Jesus. But it does not stop there. You were created for good works, which God prepared in advance for you to do. Before you were born, God prepared things for you to do. He placed people in your path, gifts in your hands, and opportunities before you. Your purpose is not something you have to figure out on your own. It is something God has already prepared. You just get to walk into it.
Jesus ends the Gospel of Matthew with the Great Commission: 'Go and make disciples of all nations.' But He does not send them alone. He says 'And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.' Go. I am with you. The two go together. God's presence is not a destination — it is a sending. He is with you so you can go. He comforts you so you can comfort others. He blesses you so you can be a blessing. The purpose of His presence is not just to make you feel good. It is to make you fruitful.
This week, I want you to ask God one question: 'What good work have You prepared for me to do?' Do not just think about it. Ask Him. And then pay attention. It might be a conversation with a coworker. It might be an opportunity to serve someone in need. It might be a step of faith you have been avoiding. When God shows you, take the step. He is not asking you to go alone. He goes with you. That is the whole point — God is with us, for a purpose.
