A Place to Belong

Matt Russell · May 2, 2026

Everyone needs a place where they belong. This message looks at how the church is designed to be that place — a family where every member belongs.

Key Scripture

Romans 12:4-5, 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Key Points

  • Belonging comes before believing for many people
  • Every person in the body has a unique and vital role
  • We need each other to function the way God intended

Quotes to Remember

“You don't have to clean up your act before you come to church.”
“The church is not a museum for saints — it's a hospital for sinners.”

Sermon Notes

Big Idea

Everybody needs a place where they belong. The church is not a building you visit — it is a family you are part of. Paul uses the image of a body to show that every single person has a place, a purpose, and a role to play. You were not made to sit on the sidelines.

01

One Body, Many Parts

Romans 12:4-5

Paul says that just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. Your belonging is not something you earn — it is something you are given in Christ. The moment you are in Christ, you belong. Not because you have it together, but because you are part of the body.

“You do not belong because you are perfect. You belong because you are in Christ.”
02

Every Part Matters

1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Paul goes into detail about the body. The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I do not need you.' The head cannot say to the feet, 'I do not need you.' In fact, the parts that seem weaker are actually indispensable. The parts we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. Paul is saying that church is not a collection of superstars and supporting cast. Every single person has been placed in the body exactly as God intended.

“The parts of the body that are hidden are often the ones that are most necessary.”
03

Where You Fit

1 Corinthians 12:18

Paul says God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be. Your place in the church is not an accident or an afterthought. God intentionally designed you and placed you exactly where He wants you. You are not a spare part. You are not here by mistake. You have a function that nobody else can fill.

“God did not create you to be a copy of someone else. He created you to be you.”

Application

This week, I want you to find your place. If you are already connected in community, look around and see who is not. Invite them in. If you have not found your place yet, take one step — join a group, show up to an event, or serve somewhere. Do not wait until you feel ready. Belonging starts by showing up.
