National coffee day is today! Not only are we wrapping up the last sermon in the series brew, we get to look at the finished product, a cup of coffee in today’s message. The weather is perfect in Ventura California for a cup of coffee. Learn about the 3 core ingredients and how they relate to a believers life.

Pastor Matt’s sermon notes are below so you can follow along.

1 – Water
Exodus 314 God said, “I am who I am. You must tell them: ‘The one who is called I Am has sent me to you.’ 15 Tell the Israelites that I, the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, have sent you to them. This is my name forever; this is what all future generations are to call me. 16 Go and gather the leaders of Israel together and tell them that I, the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, appeared to you. Tell them that I have come to them and have seen what the Egyptians are doing to them. 17 I have decided that I will bring them out of Egypt, where they are being treated cruelly, and will take them to a rich and fertile land—the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

C – Hope To Our Future

2 – Coffee Grounds
Exodus 31 One day while Moses was taking care of the sheep and goats of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, he led the flock across the desert and came to Sinai, the holy mountain. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him as a flame coming from the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire but that it was not burning up. 3 “This is strange,” he thought. “Why isn’t the bush burning up? I will go closer and see.”

A – Our Past
B – What We Practice
C – How Close We Draw To God

3 – Coffee Cup

Exodus 312 God answered, “I will be with you, and when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will worship me on this mountain. That will be the proof that I have sent you.”

A – Unity
B – “When”
C – Evidence

In this installment of Lighthouse Ventura’s Brew series; we look at the coffee label. From the type of roast to the name itself; it all matters. And the same is true for us believers. Are we wearing labels from our past? Have we let God call us something new? Do we have a life that’s true to what the label says?

Follow along with Pastor Matt here:

1 – Labeled From Our Past

Judges 6:11-12 One day the angel of God came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, whose son Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress, out of sight of the Midianites. The angel of God appeared to him and said, “God is with you, O mighty warrior!”13 Gideon replied, “With me, my master? If God is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all the miracle-wonders our parents and grandparents told us about, telling us, ‘Didn’t God deliver us from Egypt?’ The fact is, God has nothing to do with us—he has turned us over to Midian.”15 Gideon said to him, “Me, my master? How and with what could I ever save Israel? Look at me. My clan’s the weakest in Manasseh and I’m the runt of the litter.”

A – Bullied
B – Abandoned
C – Picked Last

2 – Labeled By Name

A – Your Name To Others
B – Your Name To God
Judges 6:11-12 One day the angel of God came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, whose son Gideon was threshing wheat in the winepress, out of sight of the Midianites. The angel of God appeared to him and said, “God is with you, O mighty warrior!”
C – Your Name To Yourself
Judges 7:1 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.

3 – Labeled To Be Sent
Judges 6:14 But God faced him directly: “Go in this strength that is yours. Save Israel from Midian. Haven’t I just sent you?”

A – Go In Your Strength
B – Mission Minded
C – What Are We Waiting For

This week at Ventura Lighthouse 805 – we continue our Brew Series talking about the Grind. Just like coffee will only taste like murky water if the beans are not ground first; our purpose is not made possible without God refining us for what’s next.

Follow along with Pastor Matt here:

1 – What Fuels Me Through The Grinding?

Mark 14:32-34 They came to an area called Gethsemane. Jesus told his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James, and John with him. He plunged into a sinkhole of dreadful agony. He told them, “I feel bad enough right now to die. Stay here and keep vigil with me.”35-36 Going a little ahead, he fell to the ground and prayed for a way out: “Papa, Father, you can—can’t you?—get me out of this. Take this cup away from me. But please, not what I want—what do you want?”
A – Fear

B – Doubt
C – Questioning

2 – What’s Holding Me Back?
Mark 14:37-38 He came back and found them sound asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, you went to sleep on me? Can’t you stick it out with me a single hour? Stay alert, be in prayer, so you don’t enter the danger zone without even knowing it. Don’t be naive. Part of you is eager, ready for anything in God; but another part is as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire.”

A – Quitting
B – Naive
C – Comfortable

3 – When My Process Becomes Purpose
Mark 14:39-40 He then went back and prayed the same prayer. Returning, he again found them sound asleep. They simply couldn’t keep their eyes open, and they didn’t have a plausible excuse.41-42 He came back a third time and said, “Are you going to sleep all night? No—you’ve slept long enough. Time’s up. The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up. Let’s get going. My betrayer has arrived.”

A – Suddenly
B – Get Up. Get Going
C – Man In The Mirror

This week at Ventura Lighthouse Church – we continue in the Brew series; which compares the life and purpose of a coffee bean to the life and purpose of us – the body of Christ. In this episode we look at the milling process where the beans are rested, inspected, and sorted.

To follow along with Pastor Matt’s message here’s his outline:

1 – Resting Time

Acts 8:9-11 Previous to Philip’s arrival, a certain Simon had practiced magic in the city, posing as a famous man and dazzling all the Samaritans with his wizardry. He had them all, from little children to old men, eating out of his hand. They all thought he had supernatural powers, and called him “the Great Wizard.” He had been around a long time and everyone was more or less in awe of him.12-13 But when Philip came to town announcing the news of God’s kingdom and proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ, they forgot Simon and were baptized, becoming believers right and left! Even Simon himself believed and was baptized. From that moment he was like Philip’s shadow, so fascinated with all the God-signs and miracles that he wouldn’t leave Philip’s side.
A – Prevent Crushing
B – Gasses Escape
C – Flavor Perfected

2 – Remove The Dead Shell

Acts 8:14-17 When the apostles in Jerusalem received the report that Samaria had accepted God’s Message, they sent Peter and John down to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit. Up to this point they had only been baptized in the name of the Master Jesus; the Holy Spirit hadn’t yet fallen on them. Then the apostles laid their hands on them and they did receive the Holy Spirit.18-19 When Simon saw that the apostles by merely laying on hands conferred the Spirit, he pulled out his money, excited, and said, “Sell me your secret! Show me how you did that! How much do you want? Name your price!”20-23 Peter said, “To hell with your money! And you along with it. Why, that’s unthinkable—trying to buy God’s gift! You’ll never be part of what God is doing by striking bargains and offering bribes. Change your ways—and now! Ask the Master to forgive you for trying to use God to make money. I can see this is an old habit with you; you reek with money-lust.”

A – Peers
B – Shepherds
C – Yourself

3 – How God Inspects Our Lives

Acts 8:24-25 “Oh!” said Simon, “pray for me! Pray to the Master that nothing like that will ever happen to me!”25 And with that, the apostles were on their way, continuing to witness and spread the Message of God’s salvation, preaching in every Samaritan town they passed through on their return to Jerusalem.
A – By Size
B – By Weight

C – By Defects

Ventura Lighthouse 805 church – The Brew series looks at the life of a coffee bean from farm to table/cup. It’s the role of the bean to serve. So too, is the role of a believer – serve with an attitude of worship, the Kingdom of God. In this second episode of Brew; Pastor Matt discusses the roasting process. Just like the coffee bean has to be roasted before it can be used; we must be refined by God. All the “excess”, un-necessary stuff has to fall away to reveal what God has for us in our next season.

Follow along here with Pastor Matt’s outline:

1 – Illustration Of The Roasted Bean
1 Chronicles 21:21-24 21 David came up to Araunah. When Araunah saw David, he left the threshing floor and bowed deeply before David, honoring the king. 22 David said to Araunah, “Give me the site of the threshing floor so I can build an altar to God. Charge me the market price; we’re going to put an end to this disaster.” 23 “O master, my king,” said Araunah, “just take it; do whatever you want with it! Look, here’s an ox for the burnt offering and threshing paddles for the fuel and wheat for the meal offering – it’s all yours!” 24 David replied to Araunah, “No. I’m buying it from you, and at the full market price. I’m not going to offer God sacrifices that are no sacrifice.”

A – Pressure Leads To Presence
B – Separation Is The Goal
C – Transformation Happens

2 – Identifying My Season
1 Chronicles 21:22 David said to Araunah, “Give me the site of the threshing floor so I can build an altar to God. Charge me the market price; we’re going to put an end to this disaster.”
A – Affects All Of You
B – Completely Consumed
C – Avoidance Is Fuel

3 – What God Removes
1 Chronicles 21:24 David replied to Araunah, “No. I’m buying it from you, and at the full market price. I’m not going to offer God sacrifices that are no sacrifice.”
A – Pride
B – Selfishness
C – Lack Of Self-Awareness
